Summer is when Akaroa hums, warm days, clear water, and long evenings stretch across the harbour. From alfresco dining to dolphin-spotting and garden rambles, this is the season to plan ahead and lean into the good life. Here’s how to make the most of a summer stay at Newton Heights and around the peninsula.
Start with the simple pleasures: coffee by the water, a gentle stroll along the harbourfront, and a trip through Akaroa’s French Quarter for galleries, boutiques, and historic cottages. The Giants House is a must-see on a sunny morning, its whimsical mosaics and terraced gardens are pure joy.
For nature lovers, summer is ideal for boat trips and wildlife encounters. Harbour cruises and dolphin experiences showcase Hector’s dolphins, fur seals, and seabirds along the dramatic volcanic coastline. Prefer land underfoot? Head to Hinewai Reserve for shaded bush walks, waterfalls, and sweeping lookouts, pack a picnic and take your time.

Beach days are closer than you think. Okains Bay and Le Bons Bay offer beautiful, less-crowded stretches of sand just a short, scenic drive away. Bring a book, snacks, and your sense of adventure. Back at base, select stays include a private outdoor spa best enjoyed at dusk as the hills soften into twilight.
Summer also brings the best of local flavour. Make time for a tasting and a long lunch at Caldera Estate. In town, book popular restaurants in advance for lunches or sunset dinners by the harbour, peak season fills up quickly.

If you’re visiting during event weeks, look out for markets, live music, and community gatherings, great for meeting locals and picking up artisan treats. We’re always happy to share what’s on during your dates and help with bookings.
At Newton Heights, mornings begin with breakfast, cooked and continental in the B&B rooms, or continental provisions in the apartments, before a day of exploring. Evenings are for starry skies, slow conversations, and a last look over the harbour from your terrace. If you’re dreaming of a summer that feels both effortless and memorable, Akaroa is ready to welcome you.
Take in the sea breeze and stunning sunsets on your own private outdoor terraces.
Enjoy a soothing soak while taking in stunning views, each apartment features its own private spa, while B&B guests can unwind in a shared outdoor spa.
Stay connected to high speed WiFi with overage throughout the properties.
Comfort comes in the form of king-sized beds with luxurious bed linen & exquisite interiors.

Our recent stay at Newton Heights B&B was the highlight of our three-week tour of South Island. The owner/hosts Brendon and Gail are engaging and gracious, their architecturally designed home is stunning and comfortable and the breakfast (complete with barista quality coffee choices) was abundant and divine. Beautiful views over Akaroa Harbour and easy walking distance to the village. Simply perfect in all regards!

This review may sound a little extreme however as a B&B experience this is a "must do". It's not just the joy de la vive of the welcoming hosts Gail and Brendan or the views from all corners of their beautiful home. Its not just the spa pool, the conversation, the silence as required, the comfort, cleanliness and fab breakfast its the feeling you've walked into the true warmth of an Akaroa experience - it was unforgettable!
